The imagery of my sculpture is derived from nature. Sources for ideas come from flora, fauna, and other small biological specimens. This organic iconography suggests themes of germination, growth, cyclic changes, and regeneration. The fact that one expects these forms to be tiny is important as they become unexpectedly more powerful when enlarged to a gigantic scale. I wish to make the viewer aware of his/her body and size in relation to the environment, and to enhance one’s awareness and appreciation of the surrounding natural world.
I create my sculpture by carving wood or stone and modeling clay. Quicker realistic, observational, studies are done in clay. Some of these studies are enlarged and abstracted using the time consuming method of carving in wood or stone. The larger pieces are exhibited in outdoor, sited sculpture shows and the smaller works are exhibited in galleries.
